Totems
In late 2020 I started my second project after Summer Place when I became enchanted with the blue rim that appeared when light hits a Pyrex measuring cup from a particular angle. This time I took up more serious tools of the practice but still it took me a month or so to get that first picture right. I think of these images as Totems because they all have a seeing eye at the top and a story below, and the are all carved lying down and then lifted up. At first they were all made, and quite autobiographical, but later I found the same graphic format everywhere around me and they became taken and a reflection of what I was drawn to rather than to who I was, but then again what sort of difference is that? In the end you see what perhaps influenced the design of this series, an Adolf Gottlieb lithograph, 1966, that my mother gave me and that hangs on my office wall.
